OWLS HEAD — The Owls Head Village Library is offering a unique opportunity to view and bid on local artwork. The library, run entirely by volunteers, is hosting an online art auction. In addition to a signed print by Jamie Wyeth, work from other area artists such as Eric Hopkins, Lydia Kaeyer, Bjorn Runquist, and many others are up for bid.

“This is your chance to own a piece of local art and support your community,” said the library, in a news release.

To bid, visit https://tinyurl.com/rhwjjkb5 and follow the instructions. To see the artwork in person, please visit the library at 31 South Shore Drive, Owls Head, Saturday, 10 am—2 pm; Wednesday, 4 pm—7 pm; Thursday, 10 am—12 pm.

Bidding ends August 31.

In conjunction with the art auction, the Owls Head Village Library is extending an invitation to poets and aspiring writers to participate in the Ekphrastic Poetry Contest. This contest is open to everyone, regardless of experience or background.

Meaning “description” in Greek, an ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the “action” of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning.

As you view the artwork up for auction, take inspiration from the subjects.

“Your contribution of a $5 donation with each entry is significant in keeping the doors open and is greatly appreciated,” said the release.

Entries will be accepted online at https://givebutter.com/c/OHVL_2024Auction until August 24. On August 31, the library will announce the top 3 winners and award them with gift certificates to Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop. 1st place, $100; 2nd place, $50; 3rd place, $25.
