She died less than two months ago but already a selection of artworks belonging to the late writer and feminist Nell McCafferty is to be auctioned in Dublin.

DeVeres on Kildare Street is poised to sell 13 paintings and drawings from the collection of Ms McCafferty, who died on August 21 in a nursing home in Co. Donegal.

Included in the sale is a portrait of her former lover, the author and journalist Nuala O’Faolain.

The pair met in 1980 and lived together for 15 years before parting acrimoniously, famously publicly trading insults at the time. However, they were somewhat reconciled by the time of Ms O’Faolain’s death from cancer in 2008.

The small etching of her former partner is by contemporary artist Grainne Dowling and is inscribed 1/5 Nuala by Ms Dowling. It carries an estimate of between €250 and €350.

A large abstract oil painting by the artist Margo Banks which has the inscription For Nell has an estimate of between €500 and €700.

Goats were a popular theme in Ms McCafferty’s collection – with no fewer than three images of the animal included in the collection.

There is also a large painting called Bride on a Chair by the artist Ann Wilkinson. The mixed media image shows an otherwise naked young woman sitting and wearing a long veil.

Auctioneer Rory Guthrie said the works from Ms McCafferty’s collection don’t have a high value but there are ‘some nice pieces there’.

‘This is a nice collection of 13 pictures and while not of any significant value, it was clearly personal to Nell McCafferty,’ Mr Guthrie told the Irish Mail on Sunday.

‘Included is an etching of Nuala O’Faolain and a personalised painting titled For Nell, one of several works by Margo Banks.

‘They came to us very late and we nearly didn’t get them included in the auction at all.’

A controversial nude portrait of Ms McCafferty, which debuted in 2008, is not included in the sale.

The buyer of the portrait which was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and sold within two days for €10,000, still remains anonymous though many suspected at the time that Ms McCafferty herself purchased it.

Painted by New York based artist, Daniel Mark Duffy, the portrait turned heads and drew criticism at the time, especially from PR executive and cosmetic surgery advocate, Terry Prone.

But Ms McCafferty was delighted with the work. She said: ‘I thought it was lovely. I’m naked as nature intended. It basically says “look at me, I’m f****d” but I think it is beautiful.’

DeVeres’s sale also includes a nude pencil sketch by Countess Markievicz of a reclining woman.

It was originally sold as part of the contents of Lissadell house in Co. Sligo where the revolutionary countess lived and is estimated to fetch between €500 and €700 at the auction taking place next week. The sale also includes 150 more lots by artists including Donald Teskey, Colin Middleton, Gerard Dillon and Geraldine O’Neill.

There are also a number of sculptures offered by Sonja Landweer, John Coen and Cathy Carman. The catalogue is now online and viewing at 35 Kildare Street from Thursday, October 10. The auction concludes on October 15.
