You have the chance to own the original cover art of the issue Deadpool debuted in. Here’s what you need to know.
Long before Ryan Reynolds stepped into the skin-tight red suit, Deadpool debuted in the pages of The New Mutants #98 in 1990. The wisecracking, fourth-wall-breaking Merc with a Mouth quickly became a fan favourite and the rest was history. Fast forward 34 years later, Deadpool is breaking records in cinemas along with his best bud, Wolverine.
With Deadpool & Wolverine’s box office success, it’s not surprising that the cover of The New Mutants #98 is up for auction—and it could be on track to be sold for a huge amount.

The comic that debuted Deadpool is currently up for auction
Artist and writer Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza are behind the conception of the foul-mouthed anti-hero. The character, introduced during a lull in the popularity of The New Mutants series’ run, revitalised the fans’ excitement. This particular issue not only introduced Deadpool (who was initially a villain) but also Domino and Gideon, two mutants who would later become part of the larger story of mutants in the Marvel universe.
The cover that’s going up for auction is the original cover that Rob Liefeld drew for The New Mutants #98. The owner has had the artwork for almost two decades and has held onto it despite offers. But with the uptick in Deadpool’s popularity, it’s now being auctioned off by Heritage Auctions.
Not only is it being auctioned off but its asking price is record-breaking: USD 7.5 million. That’s already a huge amount but to put that into context, the most valuable comic to date was Superman’s debut in Action Comics #1 which sold for USD 6 million. Time will tell if Deadpool’s debut will beat the Man of Steel.
The New Mutants #98 cover is currently up for auction at Heritage Auctions. If you’ve got a spare USD 7 and a half million lying around, you can make an offer here.
