Art fair weeks in a foreign city are a bit like a mountaineering expedition, requiring careful preparation and planning. But, ultimately, they are successful if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other. There’s always one more thing to see, one more person to say hello to, one more question to ask. If you’re not careful, it can all catch up to you at the summit where you’re gasping for oxygen—and collapse.
For this season’s cluster of shows in London, I timed my flight to arrive later in the day, in order to hit the ground running at the auction house viewings. Many galleries have shows opening later in the week; with Frieze on Wednesday, it seemed smart to cover the auctions as soon as practical.
