Derek Duarte has won the ‘Our Gibraltar’ competition and the £1500 prize with a large painting of a tin of corned beef.
He told GBC he was “over the moon”. He believes corned beef – served with mashed potatoes, or inside croquetas – has a similar status in Gibraltar to calentita and torta de acelgas as a national dish. Derek said he had tried to depict the can “with some humour”.
The exhibition celebrates our national identity through paintings and photographs.
Leslie Gaduzo won the art award with ‘Where is my Rock’, which invites the viewer to think about the pace of development in Gibraltar.
Stephen Perera won the photography award with a photograph called ‘La azotea’, depicting his grandad on a roof terrace in 1985.
The Our Gibraltar exhibition was organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services, on behalf of the Self Determination for Gibraltar Group, in collabration with the Fine Arts Association and the Gibraltar Photographic Society. The Culture Minister Christian Santos said 53 local artists had taken part, showing art is thriving on the Rock.
Foods, cityscapes, pubs, people… The pictures will be at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery until the 6th of September 2024 (weekdays 10am to 4pm, Saturday 10am to 1.30pm), they say something about our collective experience as a nation, promoting pride and understanding.
